Laptop advice

Want to get daughter a laptop.
Need to be able to do google classroom, play videos and music.
my last 3 machines have been Mac's - but she is not that interested so doesn't seem worth paying the apple premium....
totally clueless on what a half decent make/machine is this days . help me out please WHO'ers

i used to buy a 500 windows laptop every few years. I got a macbook about 10 years ago and it has not missed a beat. Expensive, but from my persepctive worth the money - if i was more technical minded, sure i could have upgraded components etc, but not my bag.

If I spend over £700 on a Laptop using Windows OS, am I still going to get the annoying updates and notifications or is worth paying the extra for a MacBook?

yeh the ASUS was cheap but is good enough.
its just for running MT4 and a forex EA, neither of which takes up much memory or needs a super quick processor.

Agreed. If you've got the money to spend then don't cheap out. You get what you pay for with them. Mine is a bit shit but I was expecting it to be a bit shit.

Chromebook sounds ideal and I used to have one, which I really liked. The problem is the rest of the world uses Windows or Apple, which can be a problem.
If you do look at Chromebooks, check when it was manufactured and first released as Google have an "expiry" date on the Chrome OS updates. It's relatively easy to find out what the date is by looking it up but just FYI in case you opt for one.
I've bought a cheap windows one (similar to the ASUS Vivobook but cheaper...) and now remember why I binned off Windows initially.

I know laptops are cool but a desktop is likely to have more features and more memory for an equivalent price, and to last longer because it doesn't rely on battery longevity. Manufacturers love us buying laptops because they will need to be replaced within 3-4 years at the most, whereas a decent desktop can be easily upgraded and can last twice as long. The only good reason to buy a laptop is portability, so think whether your daughter needs to move it around - and will she lose it?

I needed to get rid of my ancient PC and upgrade to a modern laptop a while ago, I am fairly clued up on how to use technology but I dont do the technical jargon.
I went on the live chat on Currys/PC World. Spoke to an actual person rather than a machine, told them exactly what I needed it for. Sky Go, Netflix, Football Manager and Office for occasional work at home (far more frequent now of course), was asked for my price range then given two options. I placed my order and it was delivered in a matter of days. Woild strongly recommended the service to anyone who wasnt sure exactly what they wanted.

Chrome book is perfect if you don’t want to do anything fancy and if you need an hdmi port check first not all of them have one

The Asus Taichi machines are pretty good, come with Windows 10 and most of the office suite. Works as a tablet or normal laptop. Very light and slim. Had mine 13 years now and still works perfectly
